Climate change adaptation solutions for Local Authorities in the Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) which is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the effects of climate change and one of the least able to meet those challenges. The country’s geography, weather and the proximity of its populated areas to coastlines increases a number of climate-related risks.  These risks are further complicated by the diversity of environmental conditions across the country’s islands and atolls.  The climate hazards that this project therefore seeks to address are adapting to sea level rises, increases in temperatures, variability in rain levels and protecting against extreme weather events. This ambitious project aims to reduce climate vulnerability, lower health risks and increase socioeconomic development for vulnerable communities by improving food and water security, enhancing disaster risk reduction and recovery, and building local adaptive capacity to respond to climate change.  This will be achieved by building the capacity of local authorities to deliver climate change adaptation services by enhancing their technical expertise.  Technical support on project preparation will also be enabled alongside knowledge-sharing that develops and fosters a network of local government authorities.  The project also contains measures to significantly enhance the climate resilience of communities and help them to better-adapt to the effects of climate change.
