Summary

Cuba is frequently affected by tropical storms and it is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events. Due to its long coastline, 57 percent of the country’s population lives in coastal municipalities which are highly vulnerable to flooding caused by intense storms and rising sea levels. The project aims to increase the climate resilience of over 1.3 million vulnerable people living in the target coastal communities by employing an ecosystem-based adaptation approach. It will restore mangroves, swamp forests and grass swamps to improve the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs. The project will also include training 60 percent of the population within the targeted municipalities on how to protect ecosystems to enhance climate adaptation.
