This project aims to boost climate resilience for smallholder farmers in northern Ghana by enhancing food security, strengthening the rural economy, and promoting sustainable livelihoods through climate-resilient agriculture, water management, landscape restoration, and resilient infrastructure.

Smallholder farmers in northern Ghana, where 80 per cent of the workforce relies on rain-fed subsistence agriculture, are increasingly exposed to risks arising from climate variability. Prolonged dry seasons, extreme rainfall, rising temperatures, and unpredictable weather patterns contribute to food insecurity, water scarcity, crop losses, and infrastructure damage. These climatic impacts jeopardise rural livelihoods, ecosystems, and community resilience in one of Ghana's most vulnerable regions.

Key activities of this project include strengthening climate information services, promoting and implementing climate-resilient agricultural practices, restoring degraded landscapes to reduce vulnerability to droughts and floods, facilitating smallholder farmers' access to finance, and enhancing local knowledge and awareness of climate risks and adaptive practices to support long-term adoption.

Poor land management, particularly deforestation for agriculture, contributes significantly to carbon emissions, worsening global warming and diminishing land productivity. While sustainable land management (SLM) practices offer climate adaptation and mitigation benefits, they face adoption barriers such as limited financing, high investment risks, low technical capacity, and poor supply chain traceability. Addressing and overcoming these barriers is key to reversing land degradation and promoting sustainable development.

The Mirova Sustainable Land Fund 2 (MSLF2) aims to tackle the interconnected challenges of land degradation and climate change by investing in SLM projects in selected countries (Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, and the Philippines). It supports reversing land degradation by investing in practices in agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable forestry. These approaches will enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and improve carbon sequestration, making agriculture and forestry more resilient to climate variability and extreme weather events.

Employing a blended finance structure, MSLF2 combines public and private capital to mitigate risks and attract private investment in SLM projects.  The fund will offer flexible financing options to small- and medium-sized enterprises and provide technical assistance to help investee companies enhance their investment readiness and operational capacity.

This project was brought under the Project-Specific Assessment Approach (PSAA), an initiative to streamline and broaden access to GCF finance for new partners, countries, and technologies.

Local CSOs and CBOs in landscapes-seascapes around the world access grant financing and technical assistance, including capacity development and knowledge sharing to maintain and enhance their socio-ecological resilience, well-being and socio-economic conditions for global environmental benefits.

Smallholder farmers in Africa are increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Rising temperatures, droughts, and shifting rainfall patterns threaten their livelihoods and food security. Cultivating 80 per cent of Africa's farmland, they face several challenges, including poor market access and limited inputs, which reduce agricultural productivity, crop yields, and income, further limiting their adaptive capacity.

The programme aims to enhance the climate resilience of smallholder farmers and the agriculture value chain, ultimately promoting increased productivity and food security. It will invest in venture, early and early-growth stage companies that offer bundled adaptation solutions tailored for smallholder farmers. This adaptation-focused blended-finance venture capital fund will build upon the success of ARAF I (FP078), which was anchored by GCF. The Technical Assistance Facility will also support investee companies and smallholder farmers in climate resilience, integrating gender considerations, measuring impact and advancing business development.  

The programme enables smallholder farmers to adopt climate-resilient agricultural practices and access adaptation funding while also providing early-stage capital for innovative climate solutions, business models and technologies to early-stage ventures and micro, small, medium-sized enterprises (MSME).

GCF’s USD 30 million equity contribution will be matched by USD 90 million equity co-financing towards a USD 120 million fund. GCF will also provide USD 4 million in non-reimbursable grant to a USD 12 million Technical Assistance facility.
