SURAGGWA’s objective is to enhance ecological and climate resilience across Burkina Faso, Chad, Djibouti, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal, while substantially increasing carbon sequestration through landscape restoration.

The Sahelian countries within the Great Green Wall (GGW) region are among the poorest and most vulnerable to climate change. Their economies largely depend on agriculture, livestock, and forestry, with over 70 per cent of rural communities reliant on rainfed agriculture. Climate change further exacerbates ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, and the vulnerability of agro-silvopastoral landscapes, threatening food security and the sustainability of local livelihoods.

The programme will restore degraded agro-silvo-pastoral landscapes to build climate resilience and mitigation capacities, develop climate-resilient, low-emission Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) value chains to enhance market access and financial inclusion for vulnerable communities, and strengthen GGW institutions to improve coordination, monitoring, resource mobilisation, and knowledge management

The programme supports the African Union-led Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative by enhancing ecological and climate resilience. It contributes to the GGW goals of restoring 100 million hectares of degraded land, creating 10 million new jobs and sequestering 250 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030 through large-scale land restoration efforts.

<p>The project objective is to increase the resilience of the population in the Lake Chad Basin by enhancing the countries capability to manage and adapt to climate-related risks through improvement of hydrological monitoring, data systems and service delivery and awareness on climate-related hazards. the specific outputs of the project are mainly aimed at (i) building an effective water information system, (ii) improving meteorological and hydrological products and services, (iii) training and informing vulnerable communities on emerging risks, (iv) strengthening the technical and institutional capacities of the national services involved in the project activities (v) dissemination and facilitation of access to relevant products, services and tools for water resources management, and their use for the protection of human lives, livelihoods and the environment from water-related hazards, and (vi) strengthening of regional and global cooperation through improved knowledge management on Lake Chad and its tributaries in order to provide appropriate climatic and hydrometeorological services.</p>

Local CSOs and CBOs in landscapes-seascapes around the world access grant financing and technical assistance, including capacity development and knowledge sharing to maintain and enhance their socio-ecological resilience, well-being and socio-economic conditions for global environmental benefits.

Smallholder farmers in Africa are increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Rising temperatures, droughts, and shifting rainfall patterns threaten their livelihoods and food security. Cultivating 80 per cent of Africa's farmland, they face several challenges, including poor market access and limited inputs, which reduce agricultural productivity, crop yields, and income, further limiting their adaptive capacity.

The programme aims to enhance the climate resilience of smallholder farmers and the agriculture value chain, ultimately promoting increased productivity and food security. It will invest in venture, early and early-growth stage companies that offer bundled adaptation solutions tailored for smallholder farmers. This adaptation-focused blended-finance venture capital fund will build upon the success of ARAF I (FP078), which was anchored by GCF. The Technical Assistance Facility will also support investee companies and smallholder farmers in climate resilience, integrating gender considerations, measuring impact and advancing business development.  

The programme enables smallholder farmers to adopt climate-resilient agricultural practices and access adaptation funding while also providing early-stage capital for innovative climate solutions, business models and technologies to early-stage ventures and micro, small, medium-sized enterprises (MSME).

GCF’s USD 30 million equity contribution will be matched by USD 90 million equity co-financing towards a USD 120 million fund. GCF will also provide USD 4 million in non-reimbursable grant to a USD 12 million Technical Assistance facility.
