<p>The project objective is to scale-up the climate resilience of ecosystems and livelihoods in Somalia by operationalizing the Great Green Wall Initiative in the country. Worldwide, vulnerable communities face increasing risks due to the growing intensity, geographic extent and frequency of climate-related hazards, exacerbated by rising temperatures associated with climate change. Hazards like heatwaves, floods, landslides and droughts cause devastating loss of lives and assets, socio-economic instability and inequality. It is essential to enhance the ability of these communities to anticipate, prepare for and respond.

This project aims to strengthen the resilience of communities in seven countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Chad, Cambodia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, and Somalia) by improving the production, dissemination and effective use of Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (MHEWS).   It will accelerate access to global and regional technical and operational support for these countries to develop comprehensive MHEWS, address policy gaps, inter-agency coordination and strategies, build technical and scientific capacities, and promote effective local action.

Implemented through the national governments of the seven countries with support from UNDP and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and other relevant partner agencies, this project will accelerate Early Warnings for All (EW4All) through coordinated global support involving all the key actors across the climate information and early warnings value chain.

GCF's Project Preparation Facility (PPF) support was deployed to help develop the project.

Local CSOs and CBOs in landscapes-seascapes around the world access grant financing and technical assistance, including capacity development and knowledge sharing to maintain and enhance their socio-ecological resilience, well-being and socio-economic conditions for global environmental benefits.

Somalia is one of the most fragile countries in the world. It faces significant challenges regarding security, inequality, displacement, conflicts over natural resources and economic development, all of which are exacerbated by climate change. Many households are food insecure. Forty-nine per cent of the population is undernourished because of very low agricultural productivity on rain-fed staple crops. The population also depends on the livestock subsector, which relies on natural pastures in the country’s rangelands.

Climate change increases the likelihood of compounding and cascading impacts for communities and ecosystems in a post-conflict context, which is marked by depleted technical capacity in government institutions, low investment in agriculture, and inadequate access to climate information among communities on the ground.

The project aims to restore productive landscapes to sustain resilient livelihoods. It will promote sustainable agricultural practices and increased access to water; enhance access to climate-resilient inputs (seeds, feed, fodder); improve market access for smallholders; and strengthen institutional frameworks and coordination for sustainable landscape management and climate-resilient agriculture.
