To improve access to best practices, foster innovation and digital transformation and facilitate cross-learning across Great Green Wall countries for enhanced sustainability and resilience to climate change impacts.

The project objective is to strengthen the regional agro-ecology and sanitation resilience to climate change and COVID-19 in the border area between Chad and Sudan. This will be achieved by enhancing regional water mapping, monitoring and governance capacity to better adapt to drought events; by improving water availability, water use efficiency; promoting adaptive agriculture production systems and multipurpose water technologies for improved livelihoods, food security and sanitation of rural households; and developing a Regional Natural Resource Management Plan.

Countries covered by the ambitious Great Green Wall initiative to reverse land degradation in Africa are among the world’s poorest and most climate vulnerable. Climate shocks are causing a loss of assets, crops and livestock; disruptions to value chains; and soaring food prices. Projections indicate persistent agricultural strain - as rainfall levels are set to continue declining while temperatures increase.

This cross-cutting programme will enhance access to credit and technical assistance for local farmers, farmers’ organisations, cooperatives and micro and small sized enterprises. This will help them implement climate-resilient and low-emission agriculture and agroforestry. This programme covers 11 countries in the Great Green Wall, in addition to Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. A major aim of the initiative is to build greater coherence and complementarity of climate action in Africa.

Supporting access to clean energy by increasing the financial viability, and promoting scaled-up commercial investment, in low carbon mini grids in Sudan, with a focus on cost reduction levers and innovative business models
